The 2nd Edition of the GNPC Nana Sir Ofori-Atta I National Energy Quiz has been launched by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, in collaboration with the Energy Ministry.
The 2nd Edition of the GNPC Nana Sir Ofori-Atta I National Energy Quiz has been launched by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, in collaboration with the Energy Ministry.
This annual competition
aimed at educating the youth about the energy industry is sponsored by the
Ghana National Petroleum Commission and the Petroleum Commission.
The Chairman of the launch,
Daasebre Prof. Emeritus Emmanuel Oti Boateng, in his address, revealed some
historical contributions of Nana Sir Ofori-Atta I in education and the support
the current Eastern Regional House of Chiefs are willing to give to support
education. He said that “Nana Sir Ofori-Atta remains a giant brand and standard
bearer of Chieftaincy leadership, a wellspring of knowledge and an icon in the
political history and culture of Ghana. It is such a brand of our leadership
history and culture of borrowing as a shared inspirational foundation of this
innovative Senior High School Competition.” He added that “The current GNPC
National Energy Quiz Competition at the SHS Level is considered as a useful
supplement and a concept that could be embraced and expanded as the footprint
of GNPC’s legacy in Ghana’s education.”
The Deputy Chief Executive
Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Mr. Prince Benjamin Aboagye, on behalf of
the CEO of Petroleum Commission revealed that “ The commission aligns itself to
government’s approach to place science and technology application at the centre
of development to ensure that science technology and innovation is mainstream
in all socio-economic activities as indicated in the coordinated program of
economic and social development policies 2017-2024. It is therefore imperative
that we begin to create the right and enabling environment for our youth basic
through to secondary and tertiary to explore their God given talents and
abilities whilst they harness their energies and creativity for national
development.”
The Deputy Minister of
Education in charge of TVET, Gifty Twum Ampofo, also revealed that “The human
resource working for us are imported human resource. There is no single
submarine welder to make sure that they fix technical issues. We have placed
too much emphasis on the STEM, but forgetting that the twin brother or STEM is
TVET.” She also added that “the government of President Nana Akufo- Addo
believes that education is key for our development as a nation and more
importantly education should be relevant to our needs and issues of our day but
we haven’t gotten there yet.” She assured that the government is committed to
ensuring that new curricula, which will be rolling out from September, will
reflect the realities of today’s world in order to adequately prepare the youth
for the world of work and society.”
Other speakers present were
Okotwaasuo kantamanto Oworae Agyekum III, the guest speaker, advised that “We
need to make an effort to create an environment for our young ones so that they
can be sensitised to associate with things concerning energy.” “This quiz is a
very good start to do that and we need to go beyond that.”
Dr. Bright Sogbey, a lead
consultant, and Humphrey Tetteh, Chief Executive Officer of National Energy
Quiz were other speakers who touched on the theme of this year’s quiz ‘The Role
of Traditional leaders in Promoting Accountable Resource Governance and
Education’.
