MTN officially launches Mobile Money at 10 to mark ten years of Mobile Financial Services in Ghana. The launch was to celebrate a decade of financial innovation on the great achievement of mobile money which was first launched on 21st July 2009.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Eli Hini, General Manager of MTN Financial Services, said that “As a leader in the in the telecommunications space, beyond our vision ten years ago which was to be the leading telecommunications brand in emerging markets, we also had a desire to provide converged telecommunications solutions to our customers hence our venture into a grey area of using the mobile phone as a tool to undertake financial transaction.”
During his speech, he thanked the government especially the
Bank of Ghana for its support. “We will also like to celebrate government and
regulators who believed in us and gave us the opportunity because in the
beginning many people didn’t know what mobile money was but they believed and
they gave us the opportunity. Today we have a super functional service that is
benefiting all of us and making our lives very simple”
He added that technological advancement has played an
enormous role to make mobile money possible throughout the ten years journey.
“The first transaction was by an MTN staff on 25th September 2008,
the first set up agent was our Graphic Road Branch in 2008, and the first
partner banks were Cal Bank, Ecobank and Fidelity Bank. The service has transcended
from money transfer and airtime to payment of bills and fees, financial
service, insurance, investment and due to the partnership with banks and
international services like VISA, Google, Western Union, Mastercard among
others who have transformed the business today.” He also mentioned that MTN has
been able to extend interest to customers and by the end of the first quarter
of this year a Hundred and Thirty-nine million has been paid as interest.
He mentioned that by the end of the launch in 2008, there
were about Eighty-three thousand customers. “Today we have over fourteen
million customers on the MoMo platform. There are a hundred and twenty-four
thousand agent points where you can access the service as well as Five thousand
mobile agents and this has given employment of high school leavers.
In an interview on the sidelines, he stated that MTN wants
to recognise their stakeholders, therefore, they are giving away ten cars and
other prices like TV sets, motorbikes and cash to lucky customers and agents as
part of the 10 years promo. He also stated that his team is also working hard
to curb the challenges of the platform especially the fraud activities and hope
that they will continue working to improve their services and make life easier
in the future.
Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr. Selorm Adadevoh,
also thanked the customers for adopting the mobile money service.
The event launched a new logo, a new radio advertisement,
and a new song. There was also a draw where twenty-five lucky customers and
some newly registered customers won Five Hundred Ghana Cedis cash as part of
the goodies given at the launch.
