KAIPTC organises Political Advisor Course
The Kofi Anan International Peacekeeping and Training Centre (KAIPTC)has organised a Political Advisor Course for Peace Support Operations in Africa in efforts to strengthening peace and security in Africa. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the course, the Dean of Academic Affairs at KAIPTC, Professor Kwaku Osei-Hwedie, expressed his appreciation to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence for the initiative of bringing this course to KAIPTC, adding “the role of the political advisor in a mission is very significant for providing leadership with proper assessment of political developments, trends and emerging issues in the country or region and making political recommendations on possible policies, strategies and other measures to address issues of interest.”
The Dean of Academic Affairs also stressed that the participants make effective use of this opportunity since it is funded by the KAIPTC and the Austrian Ministry of Defence. “Both institutions contributed to cover the costs for the course. I want to thank the KAIPTC for the partnership and the generous support to our joint effort to strengthening peace and security in Africa.”
The Austrian Ambassador to Ghana, Andreas MELÁN, in his remarks said that the vacuum created by the absence of peace enables discord and anarchy to prevail, therefore, resulting in corresponding stagnation and devastation of societies.
It is for this reason,he mentioned, this course was being organised to formalise training of Political Advisors for Commanders of Operation andHeads of Missions of the United Nation (UN), African Union and Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) missions.
He added that “I can assure you that the facilitators on this course, with their diverse backgrounds and rich experience, will definitely strive to equip you with the necessary tools to enable you function effectively and efficiently in your current or future roles as Political Advisors.I have no doubt that this training will expose you to internationally-required competencies and standards for Political Advisors and I am certain that it will enable you to better understand the dynamics of conflict and crises management in order to function effectively in multi-dimensional Peace Support Operations.”
The Ambassador urged all participants to take advantage of the facilities at KAIPTC so they can broaden their knowledge and skills in their role of Peace Support Operations.
Participants in the next two weeks will deliberate on crucial issues which are related to Political Advisor, Negotiation Principles, Reporting, Briefing and Public Diplomacy and the Media.
